Grimm’s Fairy tales | The girl with no hands | Steven Mackey (8+)
The Girl Without Hands is one of the Grimm brothers’ somewhat darker fairy tales. A poor miller makes a devilish deal, causing his daughter to lose her hands. Now what? During this fusion of music and storytelling, we discover that the girl has a special solution for this tricky situation.
Actress Daantje Idelenburg, director Rianne Meboer, writer Adam Gidwitz and musicians from Ensemble Klang take on this fable in Grimm’s The Girl Without Hands. They will accompany the story with Steven Mackey’s colourful and inventive music, bringing Grimm’s world to life in an enchanting way. American composer Mackey, who previously won a Grammy for his work, wrote new music especially for this performance.
The originally dark tale of the Brothers Grimm was adapted for this project by author and storyteller Adam Gidwitz, creator of the podcast Grimm, Grimmer, Grimmest. Daantje Idelenburg, who is a writer as well as an actress, then wrote the Dutch adaptation of this extraordinary Grimm fairy tale. And don’t worry about to much doom and gloom; there is a happy end!
